Supracondylar Fracture of the Humerus in Children -Treatments and Complications-



Abstract
the supracondylar fracture of the humerus is one of the most common fracture of the elbow in children and is associated with significant complications, such as cubitus varus and neurovascular complications.
A clinical analysis was performed on 119 patients who were treated at Inha university hospital from feb. 1988 to Feb. 1993. To assess the result and complication of the treatment.
@ES The results were as follows:
@EN 1. The average age of the patients was 6.9 years and the most common cause of injury was falling down.
2. The average union time of fracture was 5 weeks and 3 days : Conservative treatment group 5 weeks, closed reduction and percutaneous pinning group 5 weeks 4 day, and open reduction group 6 weeks.
3. According to Gartland classification, type I was 17 cases, type II was 50 cases, type Iiia was 30 cases and type IIIb was 20 cases.
4. Neurological complication was developed in 7 cases(5.7%) : median nerve 3 cases, ulna nerve 3 cases and radial nerve 1 cases.
5. All neurologic deficit resolved spontaneously within 5 months in average.
6. Cubitus varus deformity was developed in 7 cases(5.7%), and the cause of deformity was inacurrate reduction and loss of reduction.
